Hosanna!

I was struck by the interchange between Jesus and his disciples regarding the colt in the Gospel that begins our Palm Sunday liturgy today from Luke 19:28-40

If anyone asks you, “Why are you untying it?” you shall say this, “The Lord has need of it.”

We are usually concerned about our own needs and the needs of others when it comes to prayer addressed to Jesus. However, in this case, it is Jesus acknowledging what he needs.

Jesus is the Lord, the one we follow, he needs this colt to sit upon as he enters Jerusalem, this humble colt, fit for the one who is the humble, suffering servant of God. He enters his city to the shouts of ‘Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord!’ He exits his city not long afterwards to the shouts of, “Crucify him”.

In contemplating what the Lord needs as we enter this most holy time of the year, could it be our hearts, our time, our focus accompanying him on his journey to the cross? Are we able to keep watch and pray and give thanks to him for the gift of his saving love?

I have two songs to share with during this time. The Good Friday Psalm, 'Save me' from my website and Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, ‘An Angel came,' from Spotify.

Antiphon:

Save me, save me O Lord, my life is in your hands

Free me from the snares they have hidden

For you are my refuge, Lord

Into your hands I commend my spirit

You will redeem me Lord

Save me, save me O Lord………

I have heard the whispers of the crowd

Fear is all around

As they plot together against me

As they plan to take my life

Save me, save me O Lord………

As for me, I trust in you, Lord

I say, ‘You are my God’

My life is in your hands, deliver me

From the hands of those who hate me

Save me, save me O Lord

Let you face shine on your servant

Save me in your unfailing love

Let me not be put to shame, Lord,

For I have cried out to you

An angel came

An angel came

To strengthen you

May I be an angel too

Keep Watch and pray

Keep Watch and pray

and see what love will do

Father take this cup from me

Yet not my will but yours be done

In this hour, this hour of darkness

May I console your only Son.

The cross you bear

For all to see

The cross you bear

To set us free

Keep watch and pray

Keep watch and pray

and see love’s mystery

Father take this cup from me

Yet not my will but yours be done

In this hour, this hour of darkness

May I console your only Son.

And may your love so deep and true

Flow through me and comfort you

In this hour, this darkest hour

To see what love can do.

Blessings on this holy week
