We will hear the greeting, Happy Easter, throughout today and in the days to come.
As people of faith, we are happy because Jesus is Risen and he is the source of our hope.
Death and suffering have not had the last word. It will not have the last word for us either. Where Jesus goes we too have the opportunity to follow. May I extend a very Happy Easter to you all.
The Gospel reading taken from Luke 24:1-12 has the women, who were the world's first evangelizers, going to the tomb with the spices they had prepared and discovering that the stone had been rolled away and that the body wasn't there. They needed help to believe themselves because they didn't know what to think. They were startled by what they saw and by what they didn't see. Experiences in our life can be startling too causing our faith to waver, yet we are part of a long line of believers who have passed down faith and understanding to us through all the ups and downs of life.
The women are confronted by two men in brilliant clothes who state powerfully, 'Why look among the dead for someone who is alive? He is not here, he has risen.' It sounds almost like a creed. The men instruct the women to 'remember' what Jesus had told them when he was still with them, 'that the Son of man must be handed over to sinners and be crucified, and rise on the third day.' The first Easter experience of these women was simply an act of remembering Jesus' words and living in the light of that promise.
In a world that has lost focus and even belief in the Death and Resurrection of Jesus we are challenged to remember what it means to have faith in a context like ours and to keep remembering what has been handed onto us.
What have been the words and stories that have sustained us and continue to encourage us in our belief in the life, death and Resurrection of Jesus? Who are the people we are grateful for in helping us along the way? What do we particularly remember about Jesus that continues to inspire Easter joy within us?
Blessings on this Easter Sunday, your Easter week and beyond.
