Fruitfulness

The fig tree bearing fruit
The fig tree bearing fruit

We don't have a fig tree growing at our place but we have had a bumper crop of tomatoes this year. Last year nothing came of our tomato plants but this year it was a different story.

It makes a connection for me with todays parable about the barren fig tree from Luke 13:1-9.

We could have pulled out the tomato plants just as the man threatened to uproot the fig tree for producing nothing but giving the plants more time enabled them to bear fruit in abundance.

Lent is a season for us to take stock , examine our hearts and our lives in the light of the Gospel call to repent and believe in the Good News. We need that tilling of our internal soil through prayer, fasting and almsgiving.

How are our lives becoming more fruitful? Are we becoming more conscious of Christ's presence loving and healing us? Are we less anxious, less fearful, more accepting of those things that challenge us? Are we growing other-centred rather than self-centred?

The fruitfulness of God's love and mercy is all around us and we can express our thanks by responding as we hear in the Psalm today, 'My soul, give thanks to Lord all my being, bless his holy name.'

The song I have chosen for you this week is Bless the Lord from 'Holy Land.'

Blessings on your week.
