Does this upset you?

Jesus asks this question of his followers in today's Gospel. He has been teaching them about giving them his very flesh and blood and some were finding what he was saying intolerable and stopped going with him.

I am struck by how aware Jesus is of those who are listening to him. His heart is engaged with them and he is not afraid to ask the difficult questions or questions that enable them to go deeper. It's hard to ask these questions sometimes but they can make us stop and think.

When challenging or disturbing things are happening in our lives, an inciteful question can help us take stock and gain some kind of perspective and clarity. Perhaps you can recall someone in your life that has asked one of those important questions of you.

There is comfort in someone aware of what may be going on for us. The upset or whatever we are dealing with is still there but we also know someone understands and is prepared to be present with us.

In your prayer sitting with the reality of your life and relationships, you may like to hear Christ ask this question of you, 'Does this upset you?' And simply pour out your response to him.

Towards the end of the Gospel, Jesus asks another question, 'What about you, do you want to go away too? Maybe we have felt like that and acted upon that at times because of what we may have experienced or are still dealing with. Simon Peter's response echoes powerfully down the centuries, 'Lord, who shall we go to? You have the message of eternal life.......

You may like to listen to, 'You bless me' which flows directly into my usual signing off, blessings on your week.
