12 September 2002

Greetings from San Francisco! I arrived just before 9/11 to a sweltering California Day. However, the 11th was freezing as the day progressed. The city is well known for it, given the fog and all. I suppose it was appropriate given the day. I attended a memorial mass in the morning and a musical rememberance service in the afternoon. The TV was full of coverage, neally every chanel.

To more mundane matters. I rode the Cable Cars. I desparately wanted to break into song: 'I left my heart in San Francisco' but had to restrain myself. I took a ferry from Pier 39 out to Alcatraz( Spanish for Pelican) and then out under the Golden Gate Bridge. I didn't see much due to the fog. I will have another attempt before my time here is out. I visited Mission Dolores, the original mission church begun by the Franciscans way back in the late 1700's. They worked among the local Indians. A very beautiful place. Must dash.
